How to Style a Kashmiri Shawl

Taupe-grey Kashmiri shawl with pink and blue-green floral embroidery and a decorative border

A Kashmiri shawl is one of the most versatile pieces in a winter wardrobe. Its generous proportions and decorative borders let it work as a finishing layer, a statement piece or simply an extra source of warmth.

Start with the drape

The classic way is across both shoulders, with the ends falling evenly in front. For a more relaxed look, fold the shawl lengthwise and wear it over one shoulder, letting the embroidered border show.

Layer over simple outfits

Because many shawls carry detailed borders or motifs, plain outfits let them stand out. A knit top and straight trousers, or a solid kurta, gives the shawl room to be noticed.

Pair it with knitwear

Neutral knitwear in cream, taupe or navy works well beneath a patterned shawl. Keep colours in the same warm family so the layers feel intentional rather than busy.

Dress it up or down

Worn open over a coat, a shawl adds softness to a tailored look. For gatherings and occasions, pin or fold it so the border frames the shoulders.
